Land Rover Discovery 4X4 1989-2000

Anotace

There have been two generations of the Discovery, which cover three distinct phases of the model's existence. The models of the first phase (1989-1994) were characterised by square headlights and, in diesel form, the 200 Tdi engine. The second-phase models, built between 1994 and 1998, had rectangular lights and - again in diesel form - the 300 Tdi engine. Then since 1998 the Discovery name has been carried by a completely redesigned Series II vehicle which can be had with the Td5 diesel engine. Although enthusiasts often characterise these three phases of the Discovery's existence in terms of the diesel engine available in each one, there have, of course, been petrol engines as well. The much-loved V8 engine has been available from the beginning of Discovery production, and has gone through various guises. There have been 3.5-litre carburettor and injected engines, 3.9-litre injected types, and two varieties of the so-called 4.0-litre engine, distinguished by their different management systems and manifolding. Between 1992 and 1996, there was even a four-cylinder petrol option in the Discovery Mpi, though this was never a strong seller. The best-sellers, though, have always been the diesels, which brought respectable performance and good fuel economy to the Discovery, so making this bluff and heavy vehicle a realistically affordable proposition for many people. Even though the goalposts have moved considerably during the Discovery's lifetime - it was originally a leisure vehicle but has since moved into the executive family transport sector - the diesels have remained in the majority. It is the diesels, too, which have made the Discovery into an off-roader's delight. Enthusiasts revel in the finely controllable low-down torque of the Tdi engines which, together with the Range Rover-derived chassis, have always made the Discovery a vehicle for the 4x4 connoisseur. As a practical everyday vehicle, it also takes some beating. The articles reproduced in this book show why.
