Mercedes-Benz have succeeded with their roadsters where other equally prestigious manufacturers have either failed or feared to tread. Prior to 1963, the company had produced both the 190 SL a car which was, in light of what was to come. mediocre — and the 300 SL, a machine which was vastly expensive, beautiful, fast, but unbalanced. The new roadsters were, in comparison, beyond reproach. Leonard Setright reveals the mystery of the first 230 SL, the first of the family. Why was it so good? What did it have that its competitors could never attain? How did it produce such a fine line of limousine roadsters?
