Ten, twenty and thirty years ago they used to make rough, tough, cars called sports cars, and among the foremost of the breed was the Triumph TR. The first TRs were built in the classic idiom, with a rugged chassis, simple body, open top, and incredibly durable mechanical components. Despite their austerity they became immensely popular due to their ability to easily exceed 100 mph, their cheapness and their success in winning international rallies and races. These TRs led the way to exploiting the great American boom of the 1950s, along with their long-standing rival, the MG. More than 80,000 of these spartan sports cars were made before they gave way to the newly-styled TRs. Production doubled in the next fifteen years before Triumph's new masters, British Leyland, introduced a brave new TR. The TR7, and TR8 which followed, were truly modern machines aimed at the same market as the TRs of old. But that market, and many others, collapsed for the car makers, as the motoring world entered the 1980s. Suddenly every TR ever built became something of a classic: a two-seater car that meant pleasure in an age when the dead hand of legislation was making everything else seem mundane by comparison. It is no small wonder that cars like the TR have started a cult, with owners and people who fancy them anxious for information.
