Motor racing is very nearly as old as the motor car itself, and this exciting book relates its whole history from the very beginning - a splendid panorama in words and pictures spanning some 75 years. From the world's first road race (Paris-Bordeaux-Paris, 1895) to the present day, here is the story of top-line road and track racing, and the development of the racing car from a primitive and inefficient machine to a potent and sophisticated product of highly specialized skills. In the main, of course, it is the story of the Grands Prix, together with the principal subsidiary road racing classes (Formula 2 and Formula 3), but track events at Indianapolis, Brooklands and elsewhere receive full coverage. The illustrations form a collection of the utmost interest to every enthusiast. There are over 440 photographs, many of unique historical interest, which cover the whole period. Over 150 of these are superb colour photographs of cars down the years. Magnificently reproduced in this handsomely produced volume, they capture all the atmosphere and excitement of racing. Giovanni Lurani - better known to enthusiasts of an older generation as `Johnny' Lurani - has had a life-long devotion to motor racing, in which he has participated with notable success as driver, as administrator, and as author and journalist. His `Storia delle Macchine da Corsa' was originally published by the Italian Automobile Club; it has been specially edited for this English-language edition. As 'A History of Motor Racing', it puts the whole background of the world-wide racing scene into clear and detailed perspective, showing how this ever-developing sport has come to be what it is today.
