For most of BMW's automobile history there has been at least one coupe in the company's portfolio. Coupes and bmw were, it seems, made for each other. This line of activity was emphasised by the arrival in 1937 of the beautiful 327 with its autenrieth body; it has gone on to become a true classic and a very collectable automobile.
During the fifties bmw stunned the world with the showing at the 1955 Frankfurt IAA of the stunning 507 and the regal-looking 503 to great acclaim. Again, both were rare and have become classics of their time and are prized collectors' cars today.
From the modern era bmw has produced three of the world's best large coupes for the enthusiast sporting motorist who values style as well as performance. Tthis era began with the paul bracq-styled BMW 6 series coupe in 1976 and progressed in the late eighties with the 8 series, a coupe that took BMW into new reaches of the market with its alluring body style and impressive technology much of which was being pioneered for the automobile industry. And then there was the 21st century 6 series that brought bmw back into the mainstream and, like the 8 embraced modern computer technology.
As unlikely as it would have seemed, both the 6 series coupes have enjoyed successful careers in competition, the original racing for several seasons in the eighties and winning the european title against far more powerful and fancied rivals. Many of the world's top drivers began their careers in the MWS 635CSi. alpina from buchloe developed a successful racer out of the new 6-er competing in the GT3 category in europe.
BMW coupes looks at the design and development of the three large coupes in some detail making it a unique book in the bmw world. It fills a niche and will undoubtedly become a "must-have" book for any serious BMW enthusiast.
