Jorg-Thomas Fodisch and Achim Schlang authored the photo book "Jochen Mass - A Racing Icon." Nearly all the photographs come from the archive of the renowned Ferdi Kräling photo agency . Individual images are by the French photographers Bernard and Paul-Henri Cahier, Nils Ruwisch, Prof. Dr. Peter Schroeder , and from the Mass family collection .
The foreword was written by Hans-Joachim Stuck. Rainer Roßbach was responsible for the graphics/design.The large-format book traces the story of Jochen Mass , who was born on September 30, 1946 in Dorfen, Bavaria, and grew up in Mannheim, and who entered motorsport after his professional career as a seaman in the merchant navy.
After initial successes in the GTA of the Alfa Romeo dealer Helmut Hähn from Mannheim, Jochen won the German Circuit Racing Championship in 1971 in the factory Ford Capri . In the same year, he found his way into formula racing and finished sixth overall in the Formula Super Vau Gold Cup .
In 1972, Mass, together with Hans-Joachim Stuck, won the 24 heures de Francorchamps in the Ford Capri 2600 RS and won the European Touring Car Championship title .
After finishing second in the Formula 2 European Championship , Jochen made the leap into Formula 1 in 1973. Initially in John Surtees ' team , then from 1975 to 1977 as a works driver for McLaren .
Mass (McLaren-Ford) celebrated his only Grand Prix victory on April 27, 1975 in Montjuic Park in Barcelona - in the race that was stopped after 29 laps due to the tragic accident of Rolf Stommelen in the Hill GH1.
ATS, Arrows and March were Mass's other teams in Formula 1 from 1978 to 1982. With 105 World Championship races, one Grand Prix victory, eight podium finishes and 71 World Championship points, Mass became the most successful German Formula 1 driver of his time.
Jochen then shifted his focus to endurance racing , initially for the Porsche factory team . He securedthe title of runner-up in the in 1984. He piloted a Porsche 959 for Porschein the 1985 Paris -Dakar Rally . In 1987, he and Bobby Rahalwon the 12 Hours of Sebring in a Porsche 962 .
One of Jochen Mass's greatest successes came in 1989 when he , together with Manuel Reuter and Stanley Dickens, won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Sauber-Mercedes C9 (starting number 63) . In the same year, Jochen finished as runner-up in the World Sports Prototype Championship C1.
Jochen Mass has made motorsport history . His name is inextricably linked to his exceptional versatility and technical acumen! He fostered the talent of young drivers like Michael Schumacher, Heinz-Harald Frentzen , and Karl Wendlinger from an early age . Michael Schumacher received particular support from Mass. It was Mass who, during their time together at Sauber-Mercedes, recommended that the future seven-time Formula 1 World Champion join Scuderia Ferrari: "If you make Ferrari strong again, you will be the king of Italy."
Even after his active career, Jochen Mass was a regular presence at historic racing events , where he piloted classic Porsche and Mercedes vehicles. Furthermore, Jochen remained closely connected to the motorsport scene as a commentator, consultant , and eyewitness . This excellent book offers a glimpse into the unique career of Jochen Mass.
