Few Jaguars have a story as extraordinary as the Hansgen Special.

From its origins on the American racing circuits of the 1950s to its later preservation in Switzerland, this unique competition car represents a fascinating chapter of Jaguar history.

In 1951, an unknown club racer by the name of Walt Hansgen was competing in his Jaguar XK120 Roadster. Working on the Jaguar at his family garage and body shop during the week and racing at the weekends, he did so on a shoestring budget. With limited finances came a competitive glass ceiling, and despite his natural talent, he realised the car was never going to be a match for the factory-built sports racers.

By 1952, Walt was convinced the key to his success was in a Jaguar C-Type, but simply couldn’t afford one. So, he decided to design, build and race his own version of the Coventry racer. And thus, the legendary Hansgen Jaguar special was born.

This book features the 1953 Hansgen Jaguar - the car that launched the career of legendary American racer Walt Hansgen, documenting the car’s development, racing career and survival with rare photographs and detailed research.

A must-have for every serious Jaguar enthusiast.
Written and designed by ’50s American racing fan, Julian Balme, this book was commissioned by Swiss Jaguar enthusiast Christian Jenny to document the life and times of a unique racing special built from an XK120 in 1952 to contest sports car events on the East Coast of America.

The title brings to life the story of how New Jersey native Walt Hansgen, who would go on to achieve international fame as a late braking, hard-charging racing driver, first built his own car to take on the factory C-types being produced by Jaguar. He only competed with the car for a year but in that time he and the white roadster won numerous podiums and the USA’s most prestigious sports car race –the Watkins Glen Grand Prix.

The car was campaigned again successfully the following year by his close friend Paul Timmins following which it passed through several private hands – either as a successful vintage racing car on a popular road going sports car. Jenny is only the seventh owner. Included are brief biographies of the main characters, an overview of the car’s return to racing and its life on either side of the pond.
