Man has been involved in a love-hate affair with the automobile for the best part of a century. The Car presents the fascinating story of the world of motoring since the pioneering vehicles of Benz and Daimler took to the road. For some it is an expensive if necessary evil, for others an object of pride and a symbol of status; while it offers convenience and pleasure to millions, it pollutes the atmosphere, causes congestion of highways and city streets, and guzzles vast quantities of our dwindling reserves of petroleum. The Car takes a cool look at these and other social issues raised by mass motoring. The Car is written by 14 distinguished motoring authors. It contains more than 350 illustrations, most of them in colour, including many specially commissioned drawings and maps.
