Cars are built either on a production line, or one at a time. Unit-built cars are termed 'specials', and, while many specials builders have proved successful, few have reached the stage of producing cars in series production. Even fewer specials builders achieve commercial success. The founder of the company, Cecil Kimber, is probably unknown to most motor enthusiasts and journalists, but his specials and their successors are synonymous with the sports car in a way which few, if any, other marques can rival.
