Marking 50 years since the unveiling of the first Saab car prototype in June 1947, this book portrays Saab's progress to its present status as the European prestige brand in the GM portfolio. The author interviewed Saab pioneers including Gunnar Ljungstrom in his 90th year. When Ljungstrom together with the gifted artist Sixten Sason drew up the Saab 92 in 1946, they had to take account-of a world emerging from conflict. The car's reputation is traced against a background of changing world Markets, oil crises, safety and environ-mental pressures, and customer taste.
Saab achieved an astonishing run of success in the RAC Rally of Great Britain, winning three years in a row. It worrtwo Monte Carlo Rallies and some 1,000 other national and inter-national events. Rolf Made and Eric Carlsson traced the story of Saab with the author until the 1990s, when GM came into partnership and effectively relaunched it throughout the world.
Earning a singular reputation in the United States following the Great American Mountain Rally of 1956, Saab became one of the leading imported makes of the 1970s. America was — instrumental in the introduction of the spectacularly successful Convertible.
Saab's stance on safety put it in the vanguard of technical developments such as seat belts, introduced 10 years before they were mandatory even in Sweden. Diagonally-split braking systems and energy-absorbing bumpers, together with leadership in turbochargers and electronic engine management systems provided Saab with a technological advantage even over other makes in the GM orbit.
