The fierce competitiveness of this industry, based almost exclusively on the ability to produce at a very low cost (made possible by the country's social situation and the newness of manufacturing facilities) freed Japanese companies for a long while from the need to give their products a distinct technical stamp. But since they have taken the lead as the number-one producer of automobile in the world — and in the face of defensive action by the west — the Japanese have had to create and follow a sophisticated and innovative strategy of technological and industrial development in the areas of design and production which finds expression in both their small city cars and in their Formula One racing vehicles.
