Normally aspirated engines gave way to more powerful turbocharged units, before the regulations changed in 1989 to favour non-turbo motors again. The defining drivers were Gilles Villeneuve, Alan Jones, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.
