Picture the scene. There's heavy cloud with the sun streaking through but no rain, yet. Into a rest area by the side of the Cologne-Frankfurt autobahn flashes a silver Morgan Plus 8. Both male driver and female passenger each in leather jackets and flying helmets ( matching cream), hop out of the car and put on a shower-proof jacket each. They jump back in again. There's a shimmering of heat from the louvred engine cover and shine from the engine-turned aluminium suitcase on the rear mounted rack. The engine off-beats, roars, there's a squelch of rubber and off they go, to beat the rain. On Germany's autobahns they have a good chance; there's no speed limit. That's what Morgan driving is all about. Open cockpit, vintage style dashing about. And the Plus 8 has what it takes; lots of power from its 3.5 litre Rover vee-8, just about enough roadholding and handling (without too much to make it boring), too much acceleration, enough braking, and wallops of style. A clever, commercial package built with today's technology in a mode and at a pace which would not look out of place if it were 1930 all over again. This is the first ultimate Morgan Plus 8 development story ever published. It's an important modern British automotive success story in an ocean of mass-production strife and failure. It's a delightful story too, because the Morgan Motor Company is tiny, out-dated and still having fun. Those two German pilots know. Read on.
