When Walter Chrysler decided to enter the low-priced car field, Henry Ford admonished, "Walter, you'll go broke. Chevrolet and I have that market all sewed up." Thus began Plymouth's battle against Detroit's giants. Although Plymouth never bumped industry-leader Chevrolet from first, and rarely edged Ford for second, it held onto third place with such tenacity that it handily disproved old Henry's dire predictions. But the Plymouth story is more than just sales figures and second fiddle recognition, especially after World War II. With the arrival of brilliant, young designer Virgil Exner, Plymouth evolved as a leader in automotive styling—giving Chevrolet and Ford fits along the way. Plymouth 1946-1959 covers the critical postwar years in incredible detail. Author Jim Benjaminson's thoroughly researched text offers behind-the-scenes history, year-by-year and model-by-model changes, and technical specifications and analysis. More than 200 historical and current photographs illustrate little-known Plymouth stories including the turbine program, dream cars, the Powell vehicles, Plymouth diesels, and, of course, Stephen King's infamous Christine.
