In 1971 Porsche unleashed the turbocharged road racing car. It was a ferocious beast: over 1000 b.h.p. was available yet the driver found very little connection between the throttle and the awesome power at his disposal. Neverthe-less, Porsche eventually tamed its Can Am sledgehammer and it won the '72 and '73 Can Am Championships in devastating style. Porsche then turned its attention to en-durance racing and proved that a turbochL-zed racing car could be civilised and rel. enough to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Le Mans winning 936 - a spyder bocLed sports-prototype - 935 - a radically modified 911 turbo - and 956/962C - Group C - models are all-time classic racing cars. The Group C challenger won six successive Le Mans races in the Eighties. Meantime, Porsche developed a turbocharge-d Formula One engine for the McLaren national team. This dominated the '84 and 85 Grand Prix seasons and won a total of World titles over the period '84 - '86. Porsche next turned its attention to Indy Car racing and the past couple of years have seen its gradual emergence as a challenger for In-dianapolis 500 honours. This book investigates the origins of the turbocharged Porsche racing car and the technology of exhaust gas turbo-supercharging. It then details all the factory turbocharged racing engines and racing cars that have given Porsche its two decades of turbocharged success. Each significant car is profiled in depth, with details of its design and develop-ment, and is well illustrated. The book brings the Porsche turbo racing car story alive with a superb selection of photographs, including many in colour, and even a special insight into the joys and heartaches of running a Porsche turbo racing car as a privateer in international endurance racing.
