The death of Enzo Ferrari in August 1988 brought to an end one of the motoring legends of the twentieth century. For nearly 70 years II Commendatore was involved with cars, during which time he earned an unrivaled, even unique, reputation. Although he had no formal engineering training (his early ambitions were to be a singer or a journalist), Ferrari de-veloped the knack for attracting the cream of engineers, de-signers, and racing drivers. As a result, on the racetrack or on the road, his cars have always figured among the very best. Many of them —the Mondial, the 365GTB4, the 512BB, the GTO, and the F40 — are classic landmarks in the history of the automobile. The achievement of excellence has always been the Fer-rari motivating force. From revolutionary engine design to bodywork by the visionary styling houses of Pinin Farina and Michelotti, this criterion of excellence means that the pranc-ing-horse badge is only seen on cars that are as good as it is possible for them to be. Unusually, this is as true for road-going production cars as it is for racers. Godfrey Eaton charts the long and complex history of this famous marque, examining the development of the cars through the years from prototype to single-seat racers and on to road cars. The story follows the racing Ferraris through their successes at every classic racing event, whether Le Mans or the Mille Miglia. Ferraris have also enjoyed great success on the Formula One circuits, with many of the world's top drivers — Juan Fangio, Jacky lckx, Niki Lauda, and Nigel Mansell—time and again taking the prancing horse first past the flag. This racing experience gained through the quest for speed, tempered by the pursuit of excellence, has created an almost unequaled engineering expertise. The factory at Modena has applied this to produce some of the most exotic roadgoing hardware available. 1987 saw the unveiling of the fastest road-legal car ever built —the F40, with a 0-60 time of under four seconds. Despite the fact that it is also one of the most expensive, this, like all Ferraris, is one of the most sought-after and desirable cars in the world.
