The real meaning of restoration Making a Corvette better than it ever was isn't restoration. Call it enhancement, improvement or enrichment. Don't call it restoration. It doesn't say anything about making it better, or making it the way it should have been, or making it the way we'd have preferred it. Others resemble shop manuals, but this one is beautifully printed and bound with 118 illustrations, 81 in descrip-tive color. Best of all is what's inside. As an example of "state of the art" in Corvette restoration, part of this book revolves around a 4000-hour restoration of a 1965 "big block" Corvette by David Burroughs, the same
David Burroughs who conceived and created the Bloomington certification system of Corvette concours judging. For Corvette enthusiasts con-cerned with authenticity, the Bloomington Gold certificate is the most prestigious of honors.

Natural Factory Look Dave's restoration work has shoved "original" a quantum leap above where it had previously been. Natural Factory Look doesn't mean just correct parts of the right color. It means that if several gradations of chassis black were used, they'll be reproduced in the same subtle gradu-ations. It means that if a part was sprayed such that another part close by was sure to receive overspray, that part will be oversprayed again. It means that if assembly procedures resulted in no paint behind certain screw heads where you'd normally expect paint, the procedure will be duplicated faithfully. It means that if a particular chassis part was dipped in paint so that run marks and paint puddling formed in predictable areas, the restored parts will have the same characteristics. It means that if a certain degree of orange peel could be found in all but special paint orders, and the restored car wasn't one, the orange peel will be put back in. It means that when you view a Corvette restored with "state of the art" techniques, you're taking a time trip back to a Chevy dealer's show-room floor. What a trip!
