Although Lionel's star plummeted with the dawn of the rtSpace Age and the simultaneous decline of the railroad industry in the 1960s, the story of its rebound and its products from 1970 to today is every bit as important as those tales and toys from its postwar Golden Age. This colorful companion to MBI's Classic Lionel Trains and Modern Toy Trains examines how for nearly 25 years Lionel has survived and thrived despite increased competition and numerous ownership changes by adopting improved production techniques and utilizing computer technology.
From the auspices of cereal giant General Mills' Fundimensions Division, to the sometimes criticized but always pragmatic ownership of Richard Kughn, and finally on to the formation of Lionel LLC, the last quarter-century of Lionel's business and products are examined in detail. Color photographs throughout showcase the locomotives, rolling stock, and accessories that have benefited from high-tech diecasting and decaling, as well state-of-the-art electronic gadgetry like RailSounds, Railscope, and TrainMaster, which came about largely as a result of rocker Neil Young's involvement with the company.
