Anotace

Norton is a name that conjures up visions of racing in the Isle of Man and of a range of sturdy, well-built machines embodying many of the features that had been proven on the race tracks of the world. Right from the very beginning in 1902, "Pa" Norton was determined that the machines that bore his name on the petrol tank should be quality products, and it was no coincidence that one of his V-twin models won the very first Isle of Man Ti" in 1907. His standard production road machines gained just as enviable a reputation too, so that the Norton became a true thoroughbred amongst motor cycles, with a world-wide recognition as such. Good Norton photographs are notor-iously difficult to obtain, but in this book the author has gone out of his way to select a quite unique range, which tell the Norton story in full by the use of longer and more detailed captions than are usually found. By this means it has been possible to portray many of the more famous names in action during sporting events of various kinds, whilst at the same time providing illustrations of some of the more popular singles and twins that were once a familiar sight on our roads, and a rare glimpse of the Bracebridge Street factory. Sadly, decline set in when the company was acquired by the London-based AMC Group and it is soon after this period that this book's coverage ends. Although the name has lived on in the form of the Commando twin, and more recently in the yet-to-be-launched Wankel-engined machine being evaluated by the police, it was during the 1920s, '30s and '50s that Norton Motors enjoyed its golden years.
