Anotace

The 1960s were a decade of recovery for Ford, when the company moved from a maker of mundane people carriers to a maker of desirable cars. Among the ranges which achieved this transformation was the Falcon, introduced as a compact line to combat European imports in 1960 and finally phased out a decade later. The original Falcon depended on simple styling and simple engineering, and its 144 cubic inch in-line six did not offer much in the way of excitement. However, things began to hot up in 1962 when the Falcon Futura was introduced as a sporty 1963 model to compete with the Chevy Corvair Monza. In mid-year, a 260 V8 option gave it the spice it needed, and all of a sudden the Falcon had become an interesting machine. That V8 remained available alongside the regular sixes for a couple of seasons, until the 1965s were blessed with the latest 289 V8 instead. Already reskinned with squarer and rather less distinctive panelwork for 1964, the Falcon grew in size for 1966, and the new model was strictly a shortened edition of the Fairlane, with wagon variants on an even longer wheelbase. The 289 remained optional, and then 1968 brought Ford's magical 302 motor with 230bhp. But despite these changes, Falcon sales were starting to slide, dragged down perhaps by the cheap, entry-level tag which had been associated with the name from the beginning. So the final Falcons were built in 1970, and at mid-year there was a swansong model derived from the Torino which re-introduced the notion of real performance through 351 and 429 V8 options before the Maverick took over as the compact Ford for 1971. Not all Falcons had pretensions to real performance, but those which did remain interesting to enthusiasts today. The articles in this book should provide many hours of happy reading about what made the Falcon a name to be reckoned with during the 1960s.

The Falcon was introduced as a compact line to combat European imports. This is a book of contemporary road & comparison tests & driver's impressions. Models covered: Wagon, Fordor Sedan, Futura, Convertible, Station Wagon, Sports Coupe, Club Coupe, Sprint Coupe, Holman-Moody & Ranchero. 140 pages 300 illus.
